Basic White Sauce

A basic white sauce has many uses for example:

  1. Lasagna
  2. Macaroni and cheese
  3. Cauliflower with cheese sauce

Useful tip: Use a balloon whisk when making a white sauce, it helps to prevent lumps in the sauce.

Ingredients

  • 185 g (200 ml) butter
  • 100 g (180 ml) cake flour
  • 1,250 liter milk
  • salt and freshly grounded black pepper


For a cheese sauce

Ingredients

  • 250 g mature cheddar cheese, grated


Melt butter in a saucepan. Add flour and stir till well combined. Add milk little by little and keep stirring. The sauce is ready when it coats the back of a wooden spoon. Season with salt and pepper.

Cheese sauce: When sauce is thick enough add the grated cheese and stir in sauce till cheese is melted.

  • 250 g sterk cheddarkaas, gerasper


Plaas botter in ‘n kastrol en laat smelt oor lae hitte. Voeg meel by en roer baie goed tot ‘n gladde pasta vorm. Voeg melk bietjies vir bietjies by en roer goed om klonte te voorkom. Hou aan roer tot sous verdik het.

Kaassous: Wanneer sous verdik het voeg gerasperde kaas by en roer tot kaas gesmelt het.
